OHBC Bible Study: 1 Peter 1:13-21

A CALL TO BE HOLY IN AN UNHOLY WORLD
1 Peter 1:13-21
How do Christians face trials and tribulations in an evil and corrupt world? How do Christians live out the wonder and greatness of their salvation amid an antithetical culture? How do Christians continue to proclaim the salvation and hope in Jesus Christ in a world blinded by self-centeredness and self-assurance?

Beginning with 1 Peter 1:13, the apostle Peter offers an actionable to-do list for godly people to prevail in an ungodly world. In verses 13-16, Peter encourages those persecuted for the sake of Christ to prepare their minds for action and self-control and focus their hearts on what is redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ. The Christian solution to the problem of holy living in an unholy world is not isolation from the world but separation for God’s glory before the world. This statement expresses the concept of “living in the world but not of the world” (John 17:10-15).

The high cost of salvation should encourage believers to live in reverent fear before God, who will fairly and impartially judge the works of men. When we honor God through holy living, we demonstrate a life of thanksgiving for God’s gift of eternal life through His Son, Jesus Christ (vv. 17-21). The believers’ living hope based on their new birth should lead to a lifestyle of holiness. Peter exhorted his readers to prepare to meet the challenge of obedience by adopting a new mindset. The price paid for the believer’s redemption calls for reverence and obedience.
